Streams are the most-quoted number in the music industry, but on their own they don't tell you what an artist is worth. A stream from a passive playlist listener isn't the same as a stream from a superfan. A million plays from a one-hit wonder isn't the same as a million plays from a steady touring act. Turning raw streaming numbers into something that behaves like a "price" — the kind of number you could plot on a chart, compare across artists, and bet on — takes some math.

This is how Muses Exchange does it, and why every piece of the formula exists.

The basic problem: raw streams are a terrible price

The first thing you'd try, if you were building a stock market for artists, is making the price equal to monthly stream count.

Don't. Here's what goes wrong.

Big artists swallow the chart. Drake has roughly 80 million monthly Spotify listeners on a normal week. Most working artists have between 50,000 and 5 million. If you scale a chart to include Drake, every other artist looks like a flat line at zero. You can't see growth, you can't see crashes, you can't see anything.

Growth gets hidden. An artist going from 100,000 to 300,000 monthly listeners has tripled in size — that's career-defining growth. But on a stream-count price chart, they barely move. Meanwhile, a stable star going from 20 million to 22 million listeners looks like a huge jump in absolute terms, even though their growth rate is rounding error.

Old catalog masks new momentum. A legacy artist with 30 years of recorded material gets steady passive plays on shuffle queues forever. Their monthly stream count looks healthy even if they haven't released anything in five years and have zero current momentum. A new artist with a single hot single has none of that base. Raw streams reward catalog depth, not present-tense relevance.

Different platforms measure different things. Spotify monthly listeners are a unique-user count. YouTube views are a per-play count. Apple Music doesn't make most numbers public. You can't just add them up.

A good price formula has to compress big artists, expand small ones, weight present momentum over past catalog, and combine multiple platforms into one number that makes sense.

What goes into the Muses Exchange price

Each artist's price is built from four signals, weighted and smoothed.

Monthly Spotify listeners. The base layer. This is the unique-user count Spotify publishes for every artist. It tells you the scale of an artist's reach — how many real humans pressed play on something of theirs in the last 30 days.

Daily stream velocity. The rate of change. Even more than total listeners, what matters is whether that number is climbing, stable, or falling. An artist gaining 5,000 listeners per day is in a different career phase than one gaining 50.

YouTube view momentum. A second platform to cross-check the Spotify signal. Some artists — particularly in pop, K-pop, and Latin music — are massively bigger on YouTube than on Spotify. Including YouTube prevents Spotify-only blind spots.

Smoothing and compression. Two pieces of math that make the chart legible: a logarithmic compression on absolute size so the scale between a 100K-listener artist and a 100M-listener artist isn't a 1000x gap on the chart, and a short-term moving average that prevents single-day data spikes from yanking the price violently around.

Why each piece exists

Take any one of those four signals away and the chart gets worse.

Without monthly listeners, you don't know who's big. A new artist gaining 100% week over week is exciting, but if they have 800 listeners total, it's not a real career yet. Monthly listener count is the floor on whether an artist is genuinely on the map.

Without velocity, you can't see momentum. A stable star and a rising star can look identical on a single snapshot. The interesting question is the derivative — who's heating up, who's cooling down. Without velocity in the formula, the chart is a portrait, not a story.

Without YouTube, you miss whole genres. Latin music, pop in non-English-speaking markets, K-pop, and a chunk of hip-hop live on YouTube as much as on Spotify. An artist like Bad Bunny shows up huge on both, but plenty of artists are 3x larger on YouTube than on Spotify. A Spotify-only formula would systematically undervalue them.

Without compression and smoothing, the chart is unreadable. Real-world streaming data has huge gaps in scale (millions of artists with under 10K monthly listeners, a few hundred with over 50M) and is noisy day-to-day. The chart has to be honest about both, but it also has to be a chart you can actually look at.

What this means in practice

A few patterns fall out of this formula that you can see on Muses Exchange charts:

Big artists' prices move slowly. Drake's price changes a percent or two on a normal week. He has too much established mass to swing fast. To see Drake's price move significantly, you usually need an album release, a major collaboration, a controversy, or a long quiet period.

Mid-size artists are the most volatile. Artists in the 1M–10M monthly listener range can swing 5–15% on a hit single or a Grammys nomination. They're the sweet spot for the platform — big enough that the data is reliable, small enough that real movement is visible.

Tiny artists move on noise. Artists under 500K monthly listeners can have wild week-over-week swings driven by a single playlist feature or a viral TikTok. That's why the platform applies more aggressive smoothing at the small end.

Catalog artists drift. Acts who haven't released new music in years often see slow, steady decline in their price even if their monthly listener count is stable. Velocity is zero or negative, even if absolute size is healthy. The price reflects that the engine has stopped.

What this formula deliberately doesn't capture

Worth being clear about what's missing:

Revenue. An artist's price on Muses Exchange has nothing to do with how much money they make. Two artists with identical streaming numbers can have wildly different incomes depending on touring, merch, songwriting splits, and label deals. Price tracks attention, not earnings.

Artistic quality. Obviously. Stream counts measure how many people pressed play, not whether the music is good. Some of the most-streamed artists in the world produce music critics hate. Some critically-revered artists barely register on streaming. The chart is honest about that.

Fan loyalty. A million casual listeners and a million obsessive superfans look the same to a streaming counter. They're not the same career — superfans buy tickets, merch, and box sets — but the streaming data alone can't tell them apart. Building that signal in would require ticket and merch data, which isn't publicly available at the scale needed.

Songwriting and producer credits. Spotify counts streams of recordings, not contributions to recordings. Songwriters and producers who power other artists' hits don't show up. That's a real gap, and it's why the artist-stock concept works best for performing artists, not behind-the-scenes industry players.

How often the price updates

Prices on Muses Exchange refresh every 30 minutes from the latest Spotify and YouTube data. Most artists' numbers don't change meaningfully in 30 minutes — but the cycle gives the platform headroom to detect spikes fast when something does change.

For comparison, real stock prices update by the millisecond. The reason streaming prices don't is simple: streaming numbers themselves don't update that fast at the source. Spotify's monthly listener counts refresh daily at most, not continuously. The 30-minute cycle is the right granularity for the underlying signal.

Where the formula goes next

The current formula is the simplest version that produces a chart that's actually useful. Future versions will likely add:

  • TikTok signal. Increasingly the leading indicator for which songs are about to break. Hard to get clean data on at scale, but worth trying.
  • Playlist position weighting. Being on an editorial playlist matters more than being on a personal one. Stream count alone doesn't differentiate.
  • Social engagement signals. Comments, shares, fan-account activity. Leading indicators for stream growth.
  • Genre-relative scoring. Comparing an indie artist to Drake on absolute numbers is unfair. Comparing them to their genre peers tells you who's actually winning their lane.

None of these are in the current price. They're on the roadmap.

The short version

A streaming-based "price" for an artist is monthly listeners × velocity × multi-platform reach, all compressed and smoothed enough to fit on a chart. Raw streams are a bad price. The weighted, smoothed version is something you can actually compare across artists and watch over time.
